Engaging your community as a leader of a community bank is not only a social responsibility, but also a strategic opportunity to build trust, reputation and create sustainable growth.

Strategic leadership plays a pivotal role in shaping and guiding community engagement initiatives. It is important that you do not engage the community without considering your approach; community engagement encompasses planning, execution and evaluation of activities performed to create genuine connection. So, how do you effectively strategically engage your community as a leader?

“A plan without a vision is drudgery.”

The most effective strategic leaders approach community engagement with a clear vision and well-defined goals.

Your vision and goals must align to your organisation’s core values and mission. It can be tempting to see contributions to community projects as simple philanthropic gestures, however the best outcome for your community is when these contributions also aligned to your organisation’s long-term objectives. A healthy, stable community bank that can grow and increase contributions to community projects is a much better proposition than the alternative.

Now, with your vision in place, it’s time to plan.

Forming a plan requires understanding the needs and interests of your community. Leverage active listening and collaboration with key community members and customers to identify where you can make meaningful impact. Consider these areas in the context of resource-scarcity to identify the highest value opportunities to contribute.

The right community engagement will ensure that initiatives are relevant, valuable, and will be well-received by the community.

Executing your community engagement strategy requires an understanding of your own leadership style and approach. Your influence in shaping the direction of community engagement outcomes often will be intangible however that does not mean that the impact diminishes. More authoritative leaders may inadvertently steer community members towards more predictable initiatives that are already aligned to bank objectives, whereas more consultative leaders may identify initiatives that have not previously been considered.

Knowing your own leadership style, and the styles of other leaders in your organization, will help you identify who is the best person to generate the outcomes you are seeking.

The impact of these initiatives extends beyond the immediate benefits to the community. Effective community engagement enhances the organisation's reputation, strengthens stakeholder relationships, and fosters a sense of purpose and fulfillment among employees. It also provides leaders with valuable insights into societal trends and needs, which can inform future business strategies.

Strategic leadership is crucial in driving successful community engagement initiatives.

Leaders who strategically plan, execute, and align these initiatives with their organization's mission can create significant value for both the community and the organization. The leadership style plays a key role in shaping the nature and impact of these initiatives, demonstrating that how leaders engage with the community is just as important as the engagement itself.
