I totally agree with Monica Yanda’s insights on starting your own Virtual Assistant career — the best time is NOW. It may not be for everyone, but such career is continuously growing popularity and has its own share of benefits. Imagine working from the comfort of your home and being able to free your clients’ from administrative burden – truly a win-win scenario as Monica points out!
Monica Yanda is an International Virtual Assistant who works with socially conscious business owners and entrepreneurs to create a greater sense of organization and intentionality within their work and relationships. Monica believes that our lives are more meaningful — and our work is more effective — when lead with intention.
By relieving their administrative burden, Monica frees her clients to focus on which matters most. Monica worked as an Executive Assistant for over a decade before starting MY Virtual Support Solutions, LLC in early 2017. Her experience supporting high-level executives in several private sector industries equipped her with a versatile array of skill sets that she now applies to fully-customized, and fully-remote, client work. Originally based in New York, Monica currently lives and works abroad in Jena, Germany with her husband, Robert.
What are your core skill sets and services? Can you also name a few that are outside your scope?
Core skills: business communication, email and calendar management, editing, online research, and travel arrangements. Outside my scope: coding and social media management (I’m always tinkering and would love to learn more!)
What is a typical day like for you?
Most days, I wake up early to do yoga and meditate. Once I’m grounded and stretched out, I enjoy coffee with my husband while we talk through the day ahead. After he leaves for work, I use the rest of my morning to handle household errands and chores before settling in to focus on existing client work and business development. I currently work five to seven hours per day from the comfort of my home office or a nearby cafe. In the evenings, I like to relax and recharge over dinner with my husband and friends, reading, and free writing.
What is your inspiration behind MY Virtual Support Solutions?
MY Virtual Support Solutions was inspired by a desire to grow the rewarding work I love to do while increasing my personal autonomy and empowerment. It’s about the ability to add value by providing completely customizable support to my clients while increasing my own flexibility — a true win-win scenario.
How do you deal with working in a solitary environment? How do you maintain your health & wellness?
I am a very independent and self-motivated person so working alone from my home office is an ideal environment for me most of the time. Besides, I may work physically alone, but I am in constant communication via email, phone, and direct messaging. It helps to occasionally mix it up by working from a cafe and being intentional about social engagements on evenings and weekends. Now that I have more time to invest in my own well being, it’s easier to show up fully and consistently meet client needs with my best work.
How do you begin to assess what specific services your client would greatly benefit from if they are unsure of what they need?
Communication! It’s not uncommon for a client to be unsure of what they need and this can usually be sorted out through an exploratory discussion of current workload, workflow, systems, goals, and desires. My mission is to relieve those I support of their administrative burdens so they are free to do the work they are best at and enjoy most. By asking questions that reveal the later, we can identify together the tasks that could be hired out and the services that would be of greatest benefit.
What service packages do your clients usually get from you, and how do these benefit you in general?
Currently, I offer time-based or project-based service packages. In a time-based service package, clients receive full remote support within a specified time frame. This option is ideal for long-term clients and those that are unsure of what they need. The better I know and understand a client’s priorities and expectations, the more I can anticipate their needs and manage daily administrative activities on their behalf. In a project-based service package, clients receive customized support based on a specific scope and end goal. This option is ideal for clients that know exactly what they need but simply don’t have time to do it themselves. The combination of offerings allows me to take on multiple clients while optimizing personal resources.
