I love how Shankar Kumar points out the idea of going for your own initiative instead of letting fear hold you back. Indeed, starting an initiative requires a lot of risk taking; and sometimes, it’s not about the risk itself, but the pleasure of getting out from your comfort zone. Job well done, Shanks!
Shankar Kumar has over 11 years of robust experience in digital marketing. Before founding DigiTout, he worked as the VP of Digital Marketing at Repugen Web Team Ltd. During his tenure, Shankar increased its productivity by 117%, conceptualized and streamlined several digital marketing processes. He is an avid traveler, a foodie and a photography enthusiast.
As someone who has recently founded your initiative, what challenges have you encountered and how has these inspired you to push through with creating DigiTout?
Well, challenges come from two sides; both at personal and professional fronts. At a personal front, I had to convince my family about leaving a well-paid job and taking the risk of starting up. Thankfully, it went well.
At a professional end, the primary challenge was setting up a business in a tier 3 city. Lack of resources, technical infrastructure to support a global product or service were among the main challenges. I’m still busy educating people about digital marketing. But, that’s one of the perks of starting up in a developing state of the largest democracy in the world.
Knowing that the competition is tough within the digital media marketing space, how do you manage your team in order to stand out?
It’s very simple. We do have intense competition in the digital media marketing space, but our focus is always on the technical growth of the team. We have separate time allotted for the day and in the week (Knowledge Friday) dedicated to knowledge sharing where we put together all the recent innovations of the industry and discuss ways of implementing them.
We also have implemented flexible work culture. The team focuses on two things, immediate tasks and important long-term tasks. We set priorities accordingly to get things done. It involves minimal supervision, giving our employees the chance to become self sufficient. These two things help my team stand out.
What makes you different compared to other digital marketing companies?
We claim to be ROI focused and we do everything to make it true. We do not offer standard service packages because we know that requirements are different for two different businesses. So, we create tailor-made solutions for each of our customers.
I’ll say, it’s energy. It’s a young team with diverse set of skills and experiences of handling international as well as local assignments. They understand the needs of the customer living in a busy metropolitan like NYC and a person living in a rural village in India.
As a digital and social media marketing expert, what key principles do you live by and how does it impact your current career?
My key principle is to focus on the online reputation of the brand I’m working on and to make sure customers are satisfied with the products and services offered to them.
Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to making this digital enterprise a success?
There is no formula to success in the digital space. Digital marketing is not a science to be formula-driven. It’s more of an art with a perfect blend of data science.
What advice would you have for anyone looking to start their own initiative?
Don’t wait to get over your fears, you never will. Just go for it.
DigiTout is a full-service digital marketing agency helping businesses tap more market potential by using the digital space. Their specialization is low cost, ROI-focused services. In addition, they are also working on something very big for the Indian travel segment, which will be announced in January 2018. Till then, keep guessing.
