This is what most Founders would definitely agree with: Rob’s idea on creating a bulletproof business model and financial plan! Nothing can be more rewarding than coming to an initiative fully prepared, and I admire the level of preparedness and commitment that Rob Phillips has poured into his initiative.
Rob Phillips is a digital native with 15+ years leadership experience at CEO and Executive-level within the publishing and digital media spaces. The world-class online businesses and digital media products he has either founded and managed, or transformed, have generated $130+ million in profit, with exceptional margins for large $1.5 billion media corporates, early-stage companies and exciting startups in London, San Francisco and Melbourne.
How did you get your idea or concept for the business? What problems were you trying to solve?
The concept behind ETN is the utilisation of AI within the content space, via a platform. My career to date has been primarily about building technology platforms for media and/or SaaS companies operating within the membership economy. Utilising AI is simply the next stage of platform development.
Emerging Technology Networks establishes effective solutions within the nanotechnology industry. What new innovations in media and technology have you seen recently that excite you the most?
We are building a platform for the nanosciences as a demonstrator for the overall tech platform, which will have media properties for those working within the high-growth emerging tech sectors. These sectors are where the next best opportunities exist. The most tangible innovations will be in how we utilise AI in the interface in order to map content and data sets to specific interest areas and questions.
Implementing AI is something we are very interested in doing… and doing well. The biggest victories over the next two decades will involve those that grow and implement AI the best. Truly exciting times within tech and media.
What key things should an innovator focus on demonstrating when looking to connect with a technology leader such as yourself?
I look for a track record of tangible success and a genuine understanding of the key challenges and potential solutions.
How long have you been running your initiative and what have been the biggest challenges you have faced? How did you overcome them?
We’ve been building the demonstrator for the past 6-months and have the business plan ready to take to market. This is the easy part. The challenge will be raising the capital required out of Australia, where we are initially going to be based.
How do you expand your network and how does it help your business grow?
I’ve founded several successful media businesses before, both at large conglomerates and at start-ups…and have an OK network of peers. I do however look to utilise LinkedIn and industry-specific conferences/events to build my network. The more you know an industry, the better.
What advice would you have for anyone looking to start their own initiative?
Create a bulletproof business model and financial plan. Have confidence in it…and learn your numbers. Do not underestimate your costs and overestimate revenue. It’ll bite you. Additionally, ask yourself two questions:
(1) Why are you doing this; and
(2) What problem does my initiative solve.
