Timothy Hughes is well-known in social circles and emphasises several good points in the interview. The thing that resonates most though is that Timothy measures his success based on client referrals. This is a really sustainable way to measure your success – if those you work with are happy to refer you, you are well placed to service your existing and future clients. This is a simple concept, but how many companies do you see pouring the majority of their spend into winning new clients as opposed to satisfying existing ones?
Timothy Hughes is universally recognised as one of the world’s leading pioneers and exponents of Social Selling and he is currently ranked Number 1 as the most influential social selling person in the world. He was responsible for a large-scale sales transformation within Oracle, the result of which delivered in excess of $100m in sales uplift and he is currently leading the sales transformation programmes at Avaya, Thomson Reuters and Pitney Bowes and is the co-founder and CEO of Digital Leadership Associates.
What are the highlights of your journey as a Founder so far?
When people tell me I have inspired them to make a change and the success they have found using our methodology.
How do you qualify people to bring into your organization?
We are looking for people that have social media presence, more importantly have a “social” attitude. We can train people about social media. Also, wanting to change the world through social helps.
How do you foster creative and innovative thinking within your organization? How are ideas shared and implemented within your teams?
Adam Gray (my co-founder) and I instill in people that we don’t have all the good ideas. We need people to deliver incremental revenue and profit for our customers, but we also need them to be innovative. One person has just written a blog in the form of a Rap in the style of Vanilla Ice.
What motivates you as a digital leader?
When we get customers referring us. Not only are we are doing the right thing, but they want to tell people we are.
Knowing that the competition is tough within the digital marketing space, how do you manage your team in order to stand out?
We are very lucky that we are the only company in the world that do what we do, so much so that we get called in to sort competitor projects that have failed.
Where do you see digital marketing in the next 5 to 10 years? And how will it affect you?
“Digital Marketing” got hijacked by the Interruption Marketing techniques of the 1980s. Interrupt Marketing no longer works, we are proud that we are at the vanguard of what “works” and is replacing Digital Marketing.
