Bas Kooijman has some gems of insight here. Make your initiative realisable in the short term (if possible) and scale your business through automation wherever possible. I loved hearing what Bas had to say on this – don’t you sometimes feel that you spend too much time working on the here and now as opposed to executing a strategy with long term outcomes in mind? Understand your market and get launched as fast as you can and continually iterate to get better. Automate to allow you to grow your business rather than work in it.
Bas Kooijman is an entrepreneur with more than 10 years of experience in the IT and Telecom sector. He works with technical teams to understand what the sales teams and their competitors are selling. “It’s nice to be in the position where we make people from two different worlds understand each other and work on the same goals,” as he defines it.
What are the highlights of your journey as a Founder so far?
Highlights are those moments when you are getting that big deal signed by a new customer, getting top notch people saying YES to you when you recruit them and when you see a startup blooms to become a well-known company. Every company and journey has its ups and downs but each highlight is worth celebrating!
What key things should an innovator focus on demonstrating when looking to connect with a technology leader such as yourself?
For me, the most important thing is being innovative but also realisable in short term. The time is flying especially in technology. I see many great ideas which are taking 2-3 years to come up with the first model, in which case, bigger companies are able catch up and you are soon too late.
How do you expand your network and how does it help your business grow?
I mostly expand my network digitally. On Linkedin, I have a broad network. If I need a certain service or contact in any company, reaching out is easy. Offline, I still go to network events and big presentations where I meet new people with new ideas.
Brokerteam establishes effective communication across continents through VOIP services. What new innovations in communication have you seen recently that excite you the most?
Internally, we are working on the most automated routing system available now, developing new features every month. Basically, everything we do is automated, from selling to buying telecom minutes and telecom numbers (fixed, mobile and special numbers). We do this by connecting our customers through a web portal / webshop and this system is directly connected to our suppliers. We always have the correct prices and world wide stock. We see a lot of telecom startups and they all do one thing special, they find a niche and that’s very smart. We have enough telecom companies in the market but if you have a great idea, you should execute it as soon as you can!
Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to making your enterprise a success? If yes, what is it?
For us, it’s automation. To be on top of the market, we need the latest prices and stock and you should be able to deal with us in a few clicks. Customer setup is done in 10 minutes from our side when in the market it mostly gets 2-3 days on the customer technical side. The combination of speed and automation is the key. Our team that supports our customers around the clock brings most value – being reachable to our partners. It’s crazy that in the Telecom sector, this is not a standard practice.
What advice would you have for anyone looking to start their own initiative?
Please make sure that you make something unique, I still see people starting the “new verizon” or “new British Telecom”, they are already there and you will not beat them anymore; on price, you will never win the battle. Instead, make something unique, like a combination of Telecom and IoT (internet of things). For example, mobile devices that know your location and automatically redirects; a good scenario is when you are in a cinema and your phone gets redirected to your voicemail, the caller leaves a message and the recording is going to your email, then you have something to work on where the big companies don’t have resources and clients for!
