I’ve known Browney a long time and it is no surprise that he is a success. Chris Browne has established something that addresses a problem he saw, namely being how young people are treated in terms of financial advice.
He is so right. I remember having a discussion with an advisor of one of the big financial wealth firms when I was in my early 20’s (who is a friend of mine) and was told that even if you have $2 or $3 million dollars to invest, the best you are getting is a junior associate managing your account amongst a flood of other accounts. No, thank you. I love it when someone addresses a market need and I am so happy that Browney has built what he has. He also was a bloody good footballer, it’s just a shame he was a one-eyed Hawks supporter 🙂
Chris Browne started off as an Aussie rules footballer and gave everything on the field. This taught him a great deal about life – rejection, resilience, motivation, the need to be physically and mentally fit and above all, teamwork. With these life lessons under his belt, he embarked on a career in business but continued his studies at Stanford Business School.
Soon after, he noticed a gap in the market for simple financial advice targeted at people starting their financial journey. Chris was on the money. Today, Rising Tide is a huge success, growing by almost 30 percent year on year. Chris employs Australia’s best talent and his company equips young people with the tools for a successful life. Rising Tide lends an ear and takes their young clients seriously – offering positive realistic feedback and support to reach their goals sooner.
How did you get your idea or concept for the business? What problems were you trying to solve?
When I sought advice in my 20’s, I felt traditional financial planners didn’t speak my language or implied I was not cashed-up enough to be valued as a serious client. So underwhelmed by my experience, I launched Rising Tide Financial Services; specializing in financial advice for a new generation.
Can you tell us more about financial freedom? How does it help you and your clients?
Growing up, I wanted nothing more than to play AFL. I idolised Dermott Brereton, and dreamt of hanging out with the legendary Hawk, Johnny Platten. But life often doesn’t work out the way you want it to! Take my mum for instance. She didn’t plan on raising three boys alone, but she did the best she could. One year she even promised her beloved sons a Gold Coast holiday. But after slogging her guts out trying to make ends meet, she was forced to break the news – she couldn’t afford to go. We were devastated – but good things can come from a little heartbreak. I realised then I never wanted to be in my mum’s position. I wanted the freedom to say Yes – to holidays, houses, babies, you name it!
What are the highlights of your journey as a Founder so far?
My major highlight has been helping many every-day Aussies define their “Yes” and keeping them on track to make sure they achieve their goals. On a personal note, our achievements include the Association of Financial Advisors 2007 and 2010 Rising Star Award Winner and Financial Adviser of the Year Finalist 2010; Apogee FP Rapid Growth Finalist 2012, Telstra Business Award Finalist 2013, a Finalist in the AFA Practice of the Year 2014, and a Finalist in the Better Business Awards 2017.
What risks are you currently facing and how do you deal with it?
Politically motivated “red-tape” has been the biggest threat to our business in the past few years. We have tried to address this by sharing how it effects our clients and our staff with decision makers like Kelly O’Dwyer. Unfortunately, logic and common sense is often ignored due to powerful political lobby groups who do not understand nor care about small business.
How does being a Founder affect your personal life and space?
Kicking off Rising Tide 14 years ago was one of the greatest personal decisions I have ever made! It has given my life more professional meaning than most and our ongoing partnerships with our clients gives our team amazing purpose. It has been a thrill to watch our leadership and guidance help our clients achieve their goals. It makes my life rich and fulfilling.
What advice would you have for anyone struggling with their finances?
This will sound a bit cliché, however, I’m going to say it anyway; the greatest professional sports people in the world have coaches who help make them refine their craft and contribute to achieving their personal goals. Partnering a competent Wealth Coach can play a similar role in improving your finances. Most of us aren’t equipped with the knowledge to make the best financial decisions so it’s OK to lean upon someone who does.
